The Challenge

A large global consultancy had a target set of nett zero by 2026 by senior leadership. Due to the nature of their business, corporate travel was suspected to be the largest emitter of CO2 in their business after real estate. However, granular CO2 tracking had not taken place in the business before, and although some high-level emissions figures were made available in the company’s annual report, these were solely based on total mileage travelled by air.

The Solution 

Using PredictX’s CO2 calculator (part of the Sustainability Module), the business was able to dramatically improve the level of granularity available with its Carbon tracking. The C02 calculator allowed emissions to be calculated based on distance travelled, haul type, carrier, class of travel and, in some cases, actual aircraft type. This was extended with data on hotels and car rental that was integrated from a third party, and aligned with other internal calculations for rail and black car. 

The Impact

This implementation produced a comprehensive CO2 emissions model that could be bisected by business area, function, time, reasons for travel and even summed by specific project codes. This allowed:

• Planning for future carbon reduction strategies to be done on a much more valid basis.
• Creation of a local policy to combine several long-haul trips into a single one.
• The data to be fed into Simulation Engine’s Budget Planner, which allowed the business to set carbon emissions budgets for their business areas.
